Also I want to avoid car-specific diagnostic tools because that seems less useful. I don't know what kind of fluid/HVAC leak testing kits might fit my goals of being relatively cheap. The reason I'm asking in this thread is that I don't know what I don't know. But FLIR at least used to be crazy expensive.

Or maybe that have other uses like a bore camera might be useful for home repair work, looking behind drywall, maybe? And FLIR is just sweet and cool, maybe useful for hunting or HVAC stuff or emergency kit (my uncle is a fireman and I played with his). I'd like some tools that are either relatively cheap maybe under $200 because using it might save me a $200 trip to the mechanic. Is there any other diagnostic tools that make sense from a financial perspective for a home hobbyist? I know some of them are crazy expensives, hundreds to thousand+ dollars and it probably won't pay for itself given how little car stuff I do.īut I do enjoy tools, especailly mutliuse tools and I like to learn so if I bought something I'd take the time to learn it. I know they're cheap and worthwhile and next time I buy one, I'll watch some youtube videos and learn them ins and outs. I had a test light but it broke from abuse of storage in the car after 10 years and I never actually used it because I never learned its function and never had electrical problems in my cars. I have a fluke laser thermometer for HVAC testing, I guess that counts. The two diagnostic tools I have now are a pair of fluke multimeters and an OBD2 bluetooth reader that goes to my android phone to show error codes. I don't do much car stuff, but I'd like to learn and do a little more for family and friends.
